  •  The Brief Introduction of Museum
Founded in 1995, the Museum of Shandong University is based on the relics' sample of the Department of Archaeology. The former museum which was in the economy and management building of the East Campus of Shandong University was composed of four parts-- the history of Shandong University, the achievements of teaching and scientific research, painting and calligraphy and refined relics exhibitions. To memorialize the celebration of hundred-year history of Shandong University, we hold a ceremonious opening celebration on Oct. 13th, 2001. The new museum is in the science and technology building, which was founded, newly in the beautiful West Campus.
Covering 1200 square meters, the new museum consists of four parts-- hundred-year history of Shandong University, Jiangweisong's works of calligraphy, refined relics and temporary exhibition. The old-time building, which is surrounded by pines and cypresses consolidated harmoniously with the museum.
There are almost 400 samples of displayed relics, most of which were excavated by the teachers and students of the Department of Archaeology in their teaching and practice. In order to showing unique characters, the following four aspects in the display were emphasized.
             First, exhibiting the samples chronologically.
The Department of Archaeology of Shandong University investigated and excavated continuously in 30 spots. The exhibition is chronologically arranged--from Beixin Culture and Dawenkou Culture that belong to Neolithic Age to Dynasties of Song, Yuan,
¡¡Ming and Qing in Shandong region. So the exhibition is typical and chronological.
Secondly, The nature of view and admire of the displayed samples.
Excavated for many years, the relics in the exhibited room of the Department of Archaeology amount to ten thousand .The relics are various in materials, abundant in vessel types and continue in age. We try to exhibit some relics that are easily understood, well preserved and various in materials and functions. For example, as the exhibition about the noble cemetery in Xianrentai site of Changqing County in our museum, we display some typical vessels from the No.6 tomb. Which is high-level and whose master is clear. All these outstandingly show the ritual and the luxurious, extravagant living scene of the rulers. Not only it is sightly, but also it can offer academic atmosphere to us.
Thirdly, organically combining the general display with teaching.
In the exhibition, we not only try to cater to the interest of ordinary visitors, but also consider on-the-spot teaching of the Department of Archaeology. we try to show the evolutionary of the several typical vessels, such as ding-tripod, pottery yan
£¬pottery gui and pottery li display them by not only the material objects, but also the illustrations. Thus, we have unified the display with the teaching.
Fourthly, for improving the effect of the display, we have been using the modern ways.
In the design of the display, besides combining the relics with illustration and photos in the exhibition-cabinet, we have made some supplementary establishments in the display-room, such as VCD screen, the big screen of electronic induction, lamps and lanterns, the scene. What we have done will not only give you a kind of audio-visual and cordial feeling, but also construct a sort of primitive simple and elegant atmosphere. It is wonderful for you to enter the display room.
After opening the Archaeological Digital Museum of Shandong University, the teaching, research and the Museum of Shandong University will take on a new appearance.
